For this week’s challenge, I’m sharing tree silhouettes.
This Queen Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana) is located behind the gate to my rear yard. When I took this picture at 7:01pm, I thought a wierd lens-smudge caused the white spot in the sky. Nay-nay!! ‘Twas merely the waxing crescent moon! 😉
Fourteen hours later the sun returned, creating a daylight silhouette among the heart-shaped leaves of my Bauhinia tree:
There are over 200 species of Bauhinia and I have yet to determine where mine fits. (I’ve had several landscapers (I fire them frequently! ha!) each tell me something different.) Based on flower characteristics and the October-December bloom time, I’m leaning toward Bauhinia Purpurea.
Although not exactly a silhouette picture, I thought you’d like to see the first Bauhinia bloom of the 2012 season (taken Oct.22nd:)
Until next time, take a peek at other silhouette interpretations via the Zemanta links below!
🙂 🙂

I love that photo of the Queen palm! The purple sky is a brilliant backdrop of the tree. Perfect for the silhouette photo challenge.
Thank you, Gracie! That palm is really graceful looking..something about the way the fronds swish around (even in high winds like today’s) always seems so delicate.
I love silhouette pictures. Yours was a great one.
Thanks.
you’re welcome!
The Bauhinia bloom (which I’d never heard of before) is exquisite!
Thanks!
Last year it barely flowered due to two previous winters during which overnight temps dropped to the 30s for several weeks in a row…atypical! Last winter was normal (it didn’t happen!) so in spring I fertilized the tree heavily twice, hoping to coax it out of hiding. It paid off BIG! The leaves this summer were amazingly full and the branches grew long. Now they’re literally covered with flower buds! In a few weeks it should be worthy of a picture to share with you all!
Can’t wait to see it!
The pictures look great; I have no clues regarding the Bauhinia but I like the silhouette it creates.
Thanks Marcia!
It’s a beauty of a tree, for sure. 🙂
Nice silhouette! the bauhinia must be amazing in full bloom 🙂 I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.
I hadn’t seen one before living here, either! In fact there aren’t a lot around locally, prob because it’s a bit of a stretch for our zone. 45min or so south of here you see them everywhere!
Lovely photos.. the palm, beautiful… the Bauhinia bloom, outstanding….
Can’t wait to share how it looks when it’s covered in pink!
Thanks for always taking time to comment!
That bloom looks so exotic—like it belongs in the Amazon or somewhere in Asia. 🙂
You’re right on both counts!! Bauhinia Brasiliana and Bauhinia fill-in-200-asian- cultivar names! LOL!
Gorgeous shot! Didn’t I come around before? 🙂
LOL yes, I believe you did!
