Eastern Prickly Pear Bloom

Eastern Prickly Pear Bloom

In March of 2011, I stopped along a beachside street and pulled two connected prickly pear pads (with roots) out of the sand. I planted them in the Ranchero and 13 months later, this tiny plant has exploded into a 2.5′ tall x 2′ wide cactus, with a total of 15 pads. It went into bloom for the first time ever, this spring. The flower shown here opened during the morning of April 20, 2012.
